State Joins the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium

California announced that the state will join the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC), one of two consortia charged with developing a comprehensive assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards. California joins as a governing state, which precludes participation in the other consortium (PARCC) and gives the state an active role in all SBAC decision-making.
