Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) hosted members of the California Collaborative on District Reform in March for an examination of instruction and student learning in mathematics. California’s new mathematics framework and the upcoming adoption of instructional materials served as an opportunity for the Collaborative to explore excellence in mathematics Grades K–12 classrooms. Using SCUSD’s context to inform the group’s conversation, the meeting focused on the roles that teachers, students, and the systems in which they operate play in promoting inquiry-based, student-centered approaches to teaching mathematics.
