California State Board of Education Discusses NCLB Waiver
Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
The State Board of Education discussed the possibility of applying for a federal waiver from 10 provisions in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. While 41 states and/or territories have formally indicated to the U.S. Department of Education that they will apply for a waiver from current NCLB provisions, California has indicated that the state will not apply for a waiver by the November 14th deadline. The Board remains undecided about pursuing a waiver for the additional deadlines set for 2012. State officials’ comments indicate that the estimated high costs of implementing federal requirements tied to the waiver make it unlikely that the state will apply for a waiver.
